This is a family business. Tom’s dad started selling Kirbys in 1946, and Tom was at the bench by the time he was thirteen. He still owns his dad’s office on North 11th Street, and the family Kirby history is up on the wall for anyone who wants to read it.
Tom’s father, also Tom Baird, starts selling Kirbys.
Tom is repairing Kirbys at thirteen years old.
By fifteen he’s selling them too.
Tom now owns his dad’s office, has worked in it for 62 years, and at 74 is still selling and repairing Kirbys.
I was repairing Kirbys when I was 13 and I have been selling Kirbys since I was 15 years old now I’m 74 and still selling and repairing Kirbys.

A customer named Hoover once traded in an old vacuum for a new Kirby. Dave Bakke told the story of what turned up years later in that trade-in’s box in his column, which includes the line:
